Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) is undertaking an innovative pilot project at the Luceros station of TRAM d’Alacant, designed to anonymously monitor real-time passenger flow. This project, funded by the European Union, has been developed in collaboration with SICE, a multinational leader in technology integration for public infrastructure management, and Outsight, a company specializing in 3D Perception Technology (Spatial Artificial Intelligence).
The primary objective of this pilot project is to enhance user experience and optimize operational management at one of the busiest stations in FGV’s network. Through the implementation of LiDAR sensors, advanced algorithms, and the ability to create real-time digital twins, this solution enables the analysis of station occupancy, passenger entry and exit flows, waiting times, and other critical passenger behavior data.
SICE’s expertise in scalable and sustainable solutions for railway environments strengthens its key role in the digital transformation of transportation infrastructure.
“The flexibility and scalability of this technology open the door to its application in a wide range of settings, from railway stations to intermodal transport terminals across Europe. This solution not only enhances current management practices but also redefines how we will design and operate future infrastructures, laying the foundation for smarter, more sustainable, and connected transportation systems,” highlighted Raúl Sánchez-Biezma Díaz, Business Director at SICE.
The implemented solution allows FGV to gather critical insights, such as station occupancy levels, areas of high congestion, and peak hours, among other aspects. These data not only facilitate real-time decision-making but also provide a framework for developing long-term strategies that enhance safety, reduce costs, and ensure a more efficient service for citizens.
Moreover, such pilot projects represent a fundamental step toward the future of intelligent infrastructure management. The integration of new technologies, such as modern sensors and measurement devices, with advanced data processing platforms or Big Data tools like SIDERA Analytics, enables segmentation, classification, and predictive modeling to optimize operations and improve user experience.
The system adheres to privacy regulations, ensuring that all information is collected and processed anonymously, reinforcing user trust. In the coming months, the project’s impact will be assessed to identify potential improvements and explore new applications across other stations in the FGV network and other public transportation infrastructures in Spain and Europe.
