The ambitious Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project (Norfolk, Virginia), the largest road construction project in Virginia’s history, has successfully moved past the design and engineering phase and has entered the installation phase. This monumental project will involve the expansion of Interstate 64 (I-64), connecting the cities of Norfolk and Hampton with a new four-lane underwater tunnel and five new maritime bridges.
The expansion is designed to alleviate congestion and significantly improve travel times across the Chesapeake Bay. With the construction of the new tunnel and the addition of new lanes on land, I-64’s capacity is expected to increase considerably, benefiting thousands of daily drivers.
SICE, known for its extensive experience in supplying and installing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), has been selected to carry out the installation of these systems both on land and on the bridges. Additionally, SICE will be responsible for installing a crucial fiber optic network that will connect all the equipment with the new highway’s Control Center. The company boasts a strong track record in the U.S. market and proven ability to successfully manage large-scale projects.
The installation phase marks a significant milestone in the development of this critical infrastructure, which promises to transform mobility in the region and provide a smoother and more efficient travel experience for Virginia’s residents and visitors.
