SICE is proud to announce its victory in the Best Use of Tech – Transport Infrastructure Project 2024 category at TechFest, an initiative by Construction News and New Civil Engineer. This award recognises the outstanding technological innovation and positive impact of the M6 Toll highway transformation project in the UK, delivered in close collaboration with Midland Expressway Ltd. (MEL), the highway’s operator. This achievement highlights the exceptional joint effort and strategic partnership that have been key to this success.
The project has introduced a hybrid closed toll system, combining free-flow gantry trips with transactions on conventional lanes, where vehicle class and payment method are captured. Thanks to route construction algorithms, fares are calculated and charged fairly based on the distance travelled. This technological solution not only enhances the user experience by providing a faster and more convenient system but also promotes sustainability through the reuse of existing infrastructure and the implementation of lighter structures. These innovations have enabled a reduction in operational, maintenance, and environmental costs, benefiting both users and neighbouring communities.
From the outset, SICE and MEL worked closely together to optimise resources and maximise outcomes. This collaborative approach was crucial in identifying alternative solutions, such as repurposing existing bridges and using smaller structures instead of traditional gantries. These innovative designs minimised environmental impact while enhancing the reputation of all stakeholders involved.
